Abstract
The field of biomaterials has evolved significantly to include a wide spectrum of
various disciplines which include biological and bioengineering sciences. Orthodontic
applications as well as growing advances in digital dentistry has expanded the envelope
of biomimetic requirements necessitating the need of new approaches in material testing.
Efficient exchange of information and experience on material characterization along
with application of novel approaches in assessing biological properties are some of
the recent advents in material testing. Clinical trials on the performances of materials,
orthodontically-induced surface alterations, tissue mechanics and polymer/resin properties
are some of the rapidly developing trends in orthodontic biomaterial research. It
is the need of the hour to provide the contemporary clinician with as much relevant
evidence that can be garnered with the help of biomedical engineering in a research-adjunct
manner.
